  • The Mauritius Chronicles –

Call me biased, but I love Disney! I grew up with Disney films and fell in love with their characters and beautiful stories from an early age. In fact, I think I have seen everything that The Walt Disney Company has ever made.

Double trouble. I am also a completely unapologetic Marvel fan, having spent a small fortune over the years collecting comic books (including RARE editions) and waiting in over-eager anticipation for every new film release.

Small wonder then that I was thrilled with the choice of film Avengers: Age of Ultron for Thursday evening, the 3rd of September’s Disney screening, and very pleased so see that Stan Lee, the 92 year old comic legend and the creator of almost all the Marvel superhero characters imaginable (from Thor to Spider-Man) made his usual cameo appearance in the Marvel film. Disney was out to make a lasting impression at the 2nd MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase.

Disney chose to screen Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, as it perfectly showcased their theme for the Showcase – Globally Connected, Locally Relevant – as key sequences in the film were shot on the African continent. in February 2014, Marvel Studios took over the Johannesburg CBD to shoot a 10-minute action sequence featuring Iron Man and The Hulk doing battle in the streets.

Armed with hot popcorn and ready to watch, animated shorts preceded the movie. First up the Academy Award-nominated Get a Horse, with Disney favourites like Mickey, Minnie, Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, in a laugh-a-minute romp across the countryside. The 2nd was Disney•Pixar’s Partly Cloudy, which beautifully tells the tale of where delivery storks get their infant cargo.

If you have ever met the captivating Deirdre King, Head of Marketing for The Walt Disney Company Africa, and Communications Manager, Jared Stokes, you would know nothing they do nothing in half measure. It showed in the execution of the great event which save for a few rain drops, proceeded as planned.
The duo pulled off a truly enjoyable evening filled with laughter, cold slush beverages perfect for the tropical heat, hot lets-go-back-to-our-childhood-sugar-coated-popcorn, mouthwatering eats and realy great entertainment.
A heads-up for the movie buffs reading this! Sequences of the next Marvel super hero film Captain America 3: Civil War, will also be shot in Africa!
